The Hashemite University (HU) is named after the Jordanian Royal family — the Hashemites — and was established by a Royal Decree in June of 1991, over an area that spans more than 8.5 square kilometers (2100 Acres), located 25km north east of the capital Amman, near a crossing of major international highways (Figure 1), and next to the largest free trade zone in the country. HU started with three (3) academic colleges in 1995, accepting about 600 students in its first year. Over the last 18 years, HU has expanded its academic and research profile to reach thirteen (15) faculties and two deanships with more than 230 laboratory in different colleges, all equipped with the latest technological equipment. Even more impressive is the university's increase in the number of admitted students, which has 30,000 students enrolled in 50 undergraduate programs and 30 Master programs The university is currently on track to expand its infrastructure and number of academic and administrative buildings to match the expected increase in its capacity in the coming decade. In doing so, the university has set forth a goal to adopt renewable energy and sustainable development as guidelines to its expansion plans.
